Welcome to Intermediate Music for Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades!

In intermediate music class students will have a variety of opportunities to experience music, including singing, playing instruments, performing and learning about music theory. An outline of our studies includes:

VOCAL: Students will sing daily throughout the year.

  • A variety of challenging and fun warm-ups
  • Instruction in vocal technique
  • Singing a wide variety of choral literature to be performed at Masses, concerts and special events
  • Part singing: in rounds
  • Unaccompanied and accompanied singing

INSTRUMENTAL: Students will explore  a variety of instruments.

  • Pitched instruments such as xylophone, hand bells and resonator bars will be played in class and incorporated into music performances.
  • Percussive instruments will be explored as a form of basic accompaniment to vocal singing.
  • Recorders will be played by fourth and fifth grades.

MUSIC APPRECIATION AND HISTORY: Students will regularly listen to a variety of modern and classical music and discuss the style, era, mood and purpose of the music. Musical styles will include:

  • Early and modern church music
  • Classical music
  • Contemporary and popular music
  • Folk Music
  • World Music

MUSIC THEORY: Students will learn to understand, recognize and apply music vocabulary and theory concepts regarding:

  • Pitch: solfege syllable system
  • Rhythm patterns
  • Dynamic markings
  • Tempo changes

 Teacher Bio
I have studied and enjoyed music all my life. In my youth, I studied flute, piano and voice and performed in a variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles. My undergraduate education at Thomas More College included a study of the liberal arts and early church music. I have a Masters in Teaching degree with an endorsement in music education from Seattle Pacific University. I am also a certified Kindermusik, Musikgarten and Kodaly music educator.
