In intermediate music class students will have a variety of opportunities to experience music, including singing, playing instruments, performing and learning about music theory. An outline of our studies includes:
VOCAL: Students will sing daily throughout the year.
- A variety of challenging and fun warm-ups
- Instruction in vocal technique
- Singing a wide variety of choral literature to be performed at Masses, concerts and special events
- Part singing: in rounds
- Unaccompanied and accompanied singing
INSTRUMENTAL: Students will explore a variety of instruments.
- Pitched instruments such as xylophone, hand bells and resonator bars will be played in class and incorporated into music performances.
- Percussive instruments will be explored as a form of basic accompaniment to vocal singing.
- Recorders will be played by third grade.
MUSIC APPRECIATION AND HISTORY: Students will regularly listen to a variety of modern and classical music and discuss the style, era, mood and purpose of the music. Musical styles will include:
- Early and modern church music
- Classical music
- Contemporary and popular music
- Folk Music
- World Music
MUSIC THEORY: Students will learn to understand, recognize and apply music vocabulary and theory concepts regarding:
- Pitch: solfege syllable system
- Rhythm patterns
- Dynamic markings
- Tempo changes
